Viejas Fire Department Ready For Enhanced Emergency Response With New Toyne PRV
Alpine, CA (June 1, 2021) – The Viejas Fire Department (VFD) in Alpine, California, tasked Toyne with building a fully customized Priority Response Vehicle (PRV) for their department. This apparatus was recently delivered to the department where it will serve the Sovereign Nation of the Viejas Band of Kumeyaay Indians. As a specially made PRV, the new engine is ready to take the call and represents the first Toyne installed with SAM™ pump-control technology.
Since 2006, the VFD has been protecting the 500 tribal and non-tribal residents of the Viejas Reservation. Located 35 miles east of San Diego, the reservation encompasses 1,600 acres of land. To cover this territory, the VFD utilizes a Type 1, Type 3, Type 6, a truck company, a paramedic ambulance, and now a PRV to respond to emergencies. In 2020, the department played a critical role in extinguishing the Valley Wildfire. With a vision of serving the people, building a future, and preserving the land, the department’s new Toyne PRV will help the firefighters accomplish this task now and for years to come.
“We worked closely with the Viejas Fire Department to ensure that this PRV had the power and precision they need to serve their tribe,” said Bill Bird, Toyne Product Support Coordinator. “This apparatus is equipped with top-tier technology to help them accomplish their goals, and we are proud to be able to deliver such a capable PRV.”
Viejas Fire Department’s PRV body was built with welded painted stainless steel, ensuring that it can stand up to the elements and endure the toughest emergency response demands. The tailored body was mounted on a highly capable Spartan Gladiator MFD chassis. Powering their latest apparatus is a 600-horsepower Cummins ISX engine and an Allison 4000 EVS transmission.
The custom body features Toyne Tailored storage solutions such as ROM painted roll-up doors, rear slide-in ladder and pike pole storage, upper body coffin compartments, wheel well storage, and specially made slide-out shelving and swing-out tool boards.
The apparatus cab features a 10-inch raised roof, front-mounted tow hooks, two EMS compartments with exterior access, and custom in-cab storage. Toyne installed a 360 camera system so operators can maneuver with ease.
Aside from a multitude of fire and emergency equipment storage, the department’s PRV is outfitted with top-tier fire suppression hardware. It has a 500-gallon UPF tank, 1,500-GPM Hale Qmax pump, Hale Smart Foam 2.1A foam system, and an Akron Deckmaster 3440 monitor.
Water flow is controlled by a state-of-the-art touch-screen pump control system called SAM that’s mounted on a custom enclosed pump panel. SAM is a fully integrated control system that manages the apparatus pump, tank, intakes, and discharges, all at the touch of a finger. This is the very first Toyne Apparatus with a SAM system. The department’s custom pump panel has an articulating design that allows the panel to take up less space than a traditional panel and provides maximized storage options.
Hi-Tech EVS from Oakdale, California, sold this Toyne PRV to the Viejas Fire Department. As an Authorized Toyne Dealer, Hi-Tech EVS serves fire departments throughout the West Coast.
