Ready To Take The Call: Story City Fire Department Receives New Toyne Pumper

Toyne fire apparatus pumper delivery

Story City, IA (February 1, 2022) – After final inspections of their new Toyne pumper, the Story City Volunteer Fire Department has officially taken delivery of their fully customized apparatus. This represents yet another Toyne being welcomed into the department's fleet. Ready to serve and take the call, this pumper will be tasked with protecting life and property just like the dedicated firefighters of this department.

Established in 1883, the Story City Volunteer Fire Department (SCVFD) has served its community for nearly 140 years. Today, the department's 25 members cover a territory of 100 square miles that is home to over 3,500 residents. SCVFD has seen some incredible changes over the years, including improving operational capabilities, purchasing new equipment, upgrading fire facilities, and more.

"We worked closely with the Story City Fire Department to ensure that this pumper had the power and precision they need to serve their community," said Mike Schwabe, President of Toyne, Inc. "Departments like Story City know what they are looking for in an apparatus and we were able to customize a top-tier pumper to suit their needs."

The pumper Toyne built for the department is equipped with the latest and greatest technology and hardware. SCVFD's apparatus body was stall-built and constructed with bolted painted stainless steel. Designs called for a wide range of different equipment storage options, including ROM roll-up doors, upper body coffin compartments, and space to store up to 11 SCBA bottles in the wheel wells.

Toyne also installed custom slide out shelving and tool boards. This particular apparatus has a custom airbag storage compartment for heavy lifting situations. Additional storage options at the rear of the pumper include a rear slide-in through tank compartment for ladders, pike poles, and hard suction hose.

This apparatus is ready to respond with its 750-gallon UPF tank, 1,500 gallon-per-minute Hale Qmax pump, and Foam Pro 2001 Class-A foam system. Monitoring these key hardware pieces is an ICI SL Plus tank gauge and a Fire Research Pump Boss pressure governor. The pumper also features a rear master intake for the tank.

Getting water where it needs to go, the pumper's left side has pipping for two 2.5-inch discharges, a 2.5-inch intake, and a master intake. There is piping for a 2.5-inch discharge, 3-inch discharge, another 2.5-inch intake, and a master intake on the opposite side. SCVFD requested that their Toyne pumper be equipped with an Akron Hi Riser Monitor.

Lighting the way to a call is an array of Whelen warning lighting. Once at the scene, the apparatus can illuminate the surrounding area with its Whelen scene lights and telescoping lights. ILI LED strips also illuminate storage compartments.

SCVFD’s apparatus body was mounted on a Spartan Metro Star LFD chassis that boasts 450 horsepower, supplied by a Cummins ISL9 engine, and delivered by an Allison 3000 EVS transmission. The cab has seating for seven firefighters and offers additional headroom with its 10-inch raised roof. Firefighters can store items in the cab with a custom EMS compartment and additional under seat storage. The custom front bumper boasts two compartments for hose or tool storage. Other features of the bumper include a mounted winch receptacle and tow hooks.
